New Study Suggests Sparkling Water May Boost Concentration and Alertness in Esports Gamers

A recent study conducted on esports gamers has revealed an interesting finding – sparkling water could be a better alternative to still water when it comes to maintaining concentration and alertness during long gaming sessions. This discovery could have significant implications for gamers looking for healthier beverage options to enhance their performance.

Traditionally, gamers often rely on caffeine-packed drinks like coffee or energy drinks to stay focused and energized during gaming sessions. However, consuming these beverages in large quantities can pose health risks. In an effort to explore a healthier alternative, a team of researchers from the University of Tsukuba in Japan decided to investigate the potential benefits of sparkling water.

The study involved 14 casual gamers who were asked to play virtual soccer for three hours on two separate occasions. During one session, the gamers drank plain water, while in the other session, they consumed sparkling water. The researchers measured various parameters such as reaction times, pupil size (indicating fatigue), physical stress, and self-reported tiredness.

Surprisingly, the results showed that sparkling water was more effective in maintaining attention levels and reducing fatigue compared to plain water. The gamers reported less subjective fatigue, increased enjoyment, and preserved executive function when they consumed sparkling water. Additionally, there were no significant differences in heart rate, blood glucose levels, or salivary cortisol levels between the two conditions.

The researchers hypothesized that the carbon dioxide in sparkling water might interact with sensory receptors in the mouth, known as ‘transient receptor potential’ (TRP) channels, to increase brain arousal. While the study did not delve into the underlying mechanisms, it provided compelling evidence that carbonated water could enhance cognitive function during extended gaming sessions.

Aside from improved alertness and focus, gamers also reported enjoying the gaming sessions more when consuming sparkling water. Interestingly, players made fewer in-game fouls while maintaining their offensive and defensive performance levels. This suggests that sparkling water could alleviate cognitive fatigue and enhance overall gaming experience.

While these findings are promising, it is essential to consider the study’s funding source, which was partially provided by a soft drinks company producing sparkling water. Two of the study authors are affiliated with the company, raising potential conflicts of interest. However, the researchers emphasized that the funding sources did not influence the study design, data collection, or interpretation of results.

Future studies could explore the effects of sparkling water on concentration in a broader population and compare it against other beverages like coffee or energy drinks. Additionally, more research is needed to understand the biological mechanisms underlying the observed effects of sparkling water on cognitive function.

This groundbreaking research, published in Computers in Human Behavior Reports, highlights the potential benefits of sparkling water in enhancing concentration and alertness during demanding activities like esports gaming. Gamers looking for a healthier way to stay focused during marathon gaming sessions may find sparkling water to be a refreshing and effective choice.
