Bank of America reported strong results for the fourth quarter, surpassing expectations for both profit and revenue. The company’s earnings came in at 82 cents per share, higher than the 77 cents expected by analysts. Revenue also exceeded estimates, reaching $25.5 billion compared to the $25.19 billion forecasted.

The impressive performance was driven by better-than-expected results in investment banking and interest income. The bank’s profit more than doubled to $6.67 billion, up from the previous year when it faced charges related to regional bank failures and interest rate swaps. Revenue saw a significant increase of 15% to $25.5 billion, fueled by rising fees from investment banking and asset management, as well as strong trading results.

One standout metric was the surge in investment banking fees, which rose by 44% to $1.65 billion, surpassing analyst expectations by $180 million. This indicates that Bank of America’s bankers had a strong finish to the year. However, the trading operations did not exceed expectations by a significant margin. Fixed income revenue increased by 13% to $2.48 billion, while equities revenue rose by 6% to $1.64 billion, in line with estimates.

Net interest income, a key figure for the lender, also saw growth, rising by 3% to $14.5 billion, surpassing estimates by $170 million. The firm’s fortunes are closely tied to interest rates and their impact on net interest income. Investors will be looking for guidance on the company’s targets for 2025, especially as expectations for rate cuts have been tempered.

Bank of America’s strong performance follows similar beats from rivals such as JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs. The upcoming results from Morgan Stanley will be closely watched to gauge the overall health of the banking sector.
