David Joyner, best known for his portrayal of Barney the purple dinosaur on the hit children’s show “Barney & Friends,” recently shared a surprising anecdote on the “Generation Barney” podcast. According to Joyner, the Ku Klux Klan once banned their children from watching the show because Joyner, who is Black, was the actor inside the iconic Barney suit. Despite the absurdity of the situation, Joyner laughed off the Klan’s misguided decision.

Joyner recalled receiving a call from a news reporter in his hometown, asking for his comments on an article in Esquire magazine. The article revealed that the Klan had discovered Joyner’s race and subsequently prohibited their children from watching the show. Joyner’s response to the situation was one of understanding and compassion. He recognized that he couldn’t change the Klan’s views and emphasized the importance of spreading love and positivity, even in the face of hate.

During his tenure as Barney, Joyner brought the lovable dinosaur to life through physical performance, while Bob West provided the character’s voice. Joyner also appeared in various “Barney” specials, including the movie “Barney’s Great Adventure.” Despite facing backlash from groups like the KKK, Joyner remained focused on promoting love and kindness through his portrayal of Barney.

Joyner reflected on the lessons he learned from playing Barney, including the importance of self-love and spreading positivity. He shared how his upbringing, which involved daily affirmations of self-love before stepping outside, prepared him for embodying a character like Barney. Joyner’s approach to the role was rooted in authenticity and genuine care for others, making him a perfect fit for the beloved children’s character.

As Barney prepares to make a comeback with Max’s “Barney’s World,” a new TV show after 14 years, the character’s message of love and community remains as relevant as ever. The show will continue to explore important preschool emotions and teach children the value of loving themselves, others, and their communities.

With Joyner’s inspiring journey as the heart and soul of Barney, his story serves as a reminder of the power of love and positivity in overcoming adversity. As fans eagerly await the return of Barney to their screens, they can look forward to a new generation experiencing the magic of the purple dinosaur’s timeless message.
