Paris has always been a city that attracts millions of visitors each year, drawn to its rich culture and iconic landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, and the Arc de Triomphe. Last summer, the city played host to the 2024 Summer Olympics, bringing even more attention to its vibrant atmosphere. And recently, Paris welcomed back one of its own, Victor Wembanyama, along with his San Antonio Spurs teammates, as they played two NBA games against the Indiana Pacers at Accor Arena.

One of the lesser-known but equally captivating spots in Paris is Pigalle Duperré, an outdoor basketball court located in the red light district between the ninth and 18th arrondissements. Curated by Parisian Stéphane Ashpool in collaboration with creative brands Pigalle and Ill-Studio, Pigalle Duperré has become a community hub, a social media sensation, and a work of art in its own right. The 600-square-meter space, once a carpark, has transformed into a colorful and vibrant court that has captured the attention of visitors from around the world.

Since its opening in 2009, Pigalle Duperré has undergone five different design iterations, each one meticulously crafted by Ashpool himself. The court features intricate patterns and designs, built with durable rubber panels made from recycled shoe soles to withstand all weather conditions. The ever-changing colors and appearances of the court have made it a must-see destination for tourists and locals alike, garnering a 4.5-star rating on Google Maps with over 550 reviews.

The court’s popularity has grown exponentially since its viral debut in 2015, attracting visitors ranging from NBA players like LeBron James and Kevin Durant to actors like Adam Sandler, who have all experienced the unique charm of Pigalle Duperré. The court’s Instagram page boasts nearly 26,000 followers, with visitors from all over the world stopping by to capture its captivating visuals.

Despite its global appeal, Pigalle Duperré remains a vital part of the local community, providing a space for pickup games and a gathering place for residents and visitors alike. The court’s influence extends beyond basketball, as trendy businesses and new establishments have started to pop up in the area, contributing to the gentrification of the neighborhood.

For Ashpool, Pigalle Duperré is more than just a basketball court – it’s a symbol of creativity, community, and positivity in a city known for its history and tradition. Through his work on the court and other projects around the world, Ashpool continues to blend his passion for design with his love for basketball, creating unique spaces that resonate with people from all walks of life.

As basketball continues to grow in France and around the world, places like Pigalle Duperré serve as a reminder of the power of sports to bring people together and inspire creativity. Whether you’re a basketball fan, an art enthusiast, or simply a curious traveler, Pigalle Duperré offers a one-of-a-kind experience that is sure to leave a lasting impression.
