Bavaria Fiction Leads the Way in Green Production
Germany’s renowned production house, Bavaria Fiction, has made history by becoming the first major film and series production company in the world to receive validation under the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) and ISO 14001 Certification. This achievement solidifies Bavaria Fiction’s position as a green pioneer in the entertainment industry.
Under the leadership of Tobias Wolf, senior sustainability manager, Bavaria Fiction has implemented a comprehensive environmental management system to address key areas such as energy consumption, water usage, business travel, vehicle fleet operations, and waste management. The company’s goal is to reduce COâ‚‚ emissions and minimize its environmental footprint.
Since the implementation of the environmental management system, Bavaria Fiction has successfully decreased total emissions at its Munich headquarters by approximately 3% annually, from 381 to 369 tonnes of COâ‚‚ equivalents. A significant reduction in emissions was achieved through the electrification of the company’s car fleet, leading to a more than 13% decrease in COâ‚‚ emissions.
Looking ahead, Bavaria Fiction has set ambitious environmental targets, including a 4% reduction in energy and heat consumption, as well as a 5% decrease in business-travel-related COâ‚‚ emissions by 2027.
Managing directors Marcus Ammon and Jan S. Kaiser expressed their pride in being the first production company of this scale to achieve EMAS validation. They emphasized the company’s commitment to environmental protection and the continuous improvement facilitated by the environmental management system.
Tobias Wolf highlighted the importance of environmentally conscious practices in Bavaria Fiction’s productions and the strategic integration of sustainability at the company level. With EMAS validation, the company can set clear goals, implement structured processes, and measure progress towards a more sustainable future.
Bavaria Fiction is actively involved in the “Green Shooting” working group in Germany, collaborating with industry stakeholders to develop and refine Ecological Standards for Green Production. Since the introduction of these standards in 2022, over 50 Bavaria Fiction productions have adhered to the guidelines, promoting environmentally friendly filmmaking practices.
With its studio lot in Munich, the Bavaria Film Group provides an eco-friendly production environment with sustainable energy sources, further supporting Bavaria Fiction’s commitment to green production.
