The Comeback of a Classic: Fox Orders New Baywatch Series for 2026-2027

The iconic lifeguard series, “Baywatch”, is set for a revival. Fox has granted a straight-to-series order for this reboot, slated to air during the 2026-2027 broadcast season.

Co-produced by Fox Entertainment and Fremantle, the new series will consist of 12 episodes. Matt Nix has been appointed as the showrunner and executive producer, with the original creators, including Michael Berk, Greg Bonann, Dante Di Loreto, and Doug Schwartz, also serving as executive producers.

Michael Thorn, President of Fox Television Network, expressed excitement about the upcoming reboot: “In its original run, ‘Baywatch’ not only defined an era of beach life but also elevated lifeguards to iconic status. We are thrilled to partner with Fremantle, Matt Nix, and co-creator Greg Bonann to bring the beloved California dream to a whole new generation—introducing fresh narratives and exciting new talents alongside the trademark spectacle that made the ‘Baywatch’ brand a worldwide phenomenon.”

The idea of rebooting “Baywatch” has been in development since 2018, with Fox stepping in during 2024. They committed to a script and imposed a penalty, although no cast members have been announced for the reboot at this time.

Originally premiering in 1989 on NBC, “Baywatch” ran for one season before transitioning into syndication, where it continued for an impressive 11 seasons, totaling nearly 250 episodes. The series was renamed “Baywatch: Hawaii” for its final two seasons as production shifted to Hawaii. In 2003, a reunion special aired on Fox.

Christian Vesper, CEO of global drama for Fremantle, commented on the reboot: “‘Baywatch’ has always been an invaluable asset in Fremantle’s catalog and remains one of the most iconic series in television history worldwide. With Fox as our partner, we believe we can honor this legacy. Under Matt Nix’s leadership, we look forward to delivering engaging and captivating stories that resonate with both longtime fans and a new generation of viewers.”

At the height of its popularity, “Baywatch” was the most-watched television show globally, broadcasting in over 200 countries. The ensemble cast was fronted by David Hasselhoff as Mitch Buchannon, contributing to the careers of stars like Pamela Anderson, Jason Momoa, Yasmine Bleeth, and Carmen Electra. The franchise also inspired the short-lived spinoff, “Baywatch Nights,” and a 2017 feature film reboot starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Zac Efron.

This new series order marks the second attempt by Fox to revive a lifeguard drama during recent years, following the short-lived “Rescue: HI-Surf,” which was canceled after just one season in May 2025.
