An 89-Year-Old Florida Man and His Dog Allegedly Mauled to Death by Bear on Property
An elderly Florida resident, Robert Markel, and his pet dog were reportedly attacked and killed by a bear on his property in Collier County near Everglades City. The incident was discovered after Markel’s daughter witnessed the bear killing the dog early in the morning.
It is suspected that the bear attack on Markel might have occurred hours before it was reported to authorities. DNA testing is being conducted to confirm the involvement of a bear in the attacks.
Markel lived alone with his dog, and wildlife officials are continuing to search the area to ensure the safety of residents and visitors. A dead bear was later found in the nearby woods, and bear traps were set up in the area to prevent any further incidents.
If confirmed, this would be Florida’s first recorded fatal bear attack. The state is home to approximately 4,000 bears that inhabit forests and swamps across the region.
Florida officials advise residents to avoid running away or climbing trees if they encounter a bear and instead slowly back away to safety. Direct eye contact should also be avoided as it may be perceived as aggressive behavior. In the event of an attack, individuals are advised to fight back aggressively using rocks, sticks, or their bare hands.
It is important for residents to remain vigilant and take precautions when in bear-inhabited areas to ensure their safety and prevent any further incidents.
