Bela Bajaria, the chief content officer at Netflix, delivered a moving speech on gender equality and access to education at Variety’s Power of Women event in Hollywood. During her acceptance speech, she highlighted the work of the education organization Room to Read and honored her two great-grandmothers who were married at a young age and unable to pursue a college education due to cultural norms in rural India.

Bajaria emphasized the importance of education for girls, citing the challenges many face in countries where societal expectations limit their opportunities. She pointed out that 122 million girls worldwide are not enrolled in primary or secondary education, highlighting the need to empower young girls to have control over their own lives.

Reflecting on her visits to Room to Read’s Girls Education Program in Tanzania and Cambodia, Bajaria emphasized the impact of local women who support female students in their educational journey. These women serve as mentors, sisters, and social workers, building trust with parents and community elders while empowering girls to advocate for themselves.

Bajaria stressed that prioritizing education strengthens communities and cultures, rather than rejecting them. She explained how women with financial influence contribute back to their families and villages, ultimately benefiting society as a whole.

As the head of content at Netflix, Bajaria oversees a diverse range of series, including popular shows like “Squid Game,” “Stranger Things,” and “Bridgerton.” Prior to her role at Netflix, she held senior positions at CBS Entertainment and Universal Television.

Bajaria has been recognized for her impact on the industry, appearing on Variety’s LA Women’s Impact Report and joining the Coca-Cola Board of Directors. She is also involved in various community organizations, serving on the boards of the Paley Center and the Saban Community Clinic in Los Angeles.
