FX’s body-horror series “The Beauty” has captivated audiences with its grotesque yet captivating transformations brought on by a mysterious drug. As the first season comes to a close, the two-part finale delves into the darker side of The Beauty, showcasing the devastating consequences of chasing perfection at any cost.
The finale introduces Bella, a high school student who becomes enamored with The Beauty after seeing her friend undergo a stunning transformation. Desperate to achieve the same level of perfection, Bella resorts to drastic measures, ultimately leading to a nightmarish outcome. Director Michael Uppendahl explains that Bella’s story serves as a cautionary tale, highlighting the dangers of seeking superficial beauty without considering the consequences.
The visual effects used to portray Bella’s transformation are haunting and visceral, showcasing the true horror of The Beauty’s power. The practical effects team worked tirelessly to create a suit that would depict Bella’s grotesque new form, with actress Emma Halleen embodying the monstrous creation. The scene is a gut-wrenching reminder of the price of vanity and the dangers of unchecked desire for perfection.
As the finale unfolds, we see the repercussions of The Beauty’s influence on other characters, including Byron Forst, the enigmatic dealer behind the drug. Forced to confront the devastation wrought by The Beauty, Byron undergoes a change of heart, halting the drug’s distribution and attempting to make amends for the harm caused. The finale sets the stage for future conflicts and moral dilemmas, hinting at the complex web of consequences that The Beauty has unleashed.
The season finale also introduces new characters and plot twists, setting the stage for a potential second season. With unresolved storylines and lingering questions, “The Beauty” leaves viewers on the edge of their seats, eager to see what lies ahead. As the characters grapple with the aftermath of their choices, the series explores themes of identity, morality, and the true cost of beauty.
As the season comes to a close, “The Beauty” tees up plenty of complications for future seasons, although FX hasn’t renewed it yet. Uppendahl says he would like to see Lux Pascal return as Carla, the transgender science technician originally played by Rev Yolanda, who took a dose stolen from Bryon. Carla’s friend Mike (played in Beauty form by Joey Pollari) was already assassinated for lifting their shots, so audiences have good reason to worry for Carla.
