SPOILER ALERT: This article contains spoilers for the Season 2 premiere of “Daredevil: Born Again,” now streaming on Disney+.

“Daredevil: Born Again” returns a year after its revival on Disney+, maintaining its relevance.

Following the declaration of martial law in New York City by Mayor Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) and the ban on crime-fighting, a violent Anti-Vigilante Task Force has been established. This force detains citizens without due process, echoing scenes reminiscent of ICE’s actions against protesters, though the storyline was penned nearly two years ago.

“Any resemblance to reality is unintended, yet as Stan Lee said, Marvel mirrors the world outside our window. Sometimes narratives evolve independently,” commented Brad Winderbaum, executive producer and head of Marvel Television, to Variety at the New York premiere on Monday night.

In the premiere of Season 2, the task force is seen dismantling local businesses under Fisk’s orders and pursuing vigilantes. Daredevil (Charlie Cox) is one of their targets, with Swordsman (Tony Dalton) and many others already in custody. Jon Bernthal’s Punisher managed to escape his captivity in the Season 1 post-credits scene.

“Being a New Yorker, the events depicted in the second season would be genuinely terrifying for a New Yorker,” remarked D’Onofrio. “Certain elements of what we portray in the second season are unsettling to imagine if they were reality.”

Journalist BB Urich (Genneya Walton) is producing pro-Fisk propaganda videos highlighting crime reduction, while a disguised Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) infiltrates to uncover secrets. Despite Matt Murdock’s absence, Daredevil continues his battle against Kingpin. The premiere opens with an exciting confrontation on a cargo ship trafficking illegal weapons in the East River. Daredevil thwarts Kingpin’s operation, orchestrated by Matthew Lillard’s enigmatic power player, Mr. Charles, who hints at influential connections by mentioning Julia Louis Dreyfus’ CIA director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.

“Being part of a project that mirrors current global issues is incredible,” said Lillard, who debuts in Marvel with Season 2. “We hope viewers realize the need for superheroes—ordinary people standing for justice. This series may inspire citizens to fight oppression experienced by many in America today.”

The episode concludes with a violent clash between Daredevil and Kingpin’s forces. A group of officers breaks into ex-NYPD Officer Cherry’s (Clark Johnson) home upon discovering his connection to the vigilante. Cherry is restrained and beaten, but Daredevil intervenes—nearly rescuing him. As Daredevil fights, he hears Cherry’s weakening heartbeat and loses his advantage. The officers unmask him, but projectiles suddenly fly through the window, incapacitating the enemies. Wilson Bethel’s sharpshooter Bullseye returns, saving Daredevil, though Cherry’s fate remains uncertain.

Season 2 of “Daredevil: Born Again” continues to delve into darker themes, making it the most violent series on Disney+ with its explicit language and intense action. Winderbaum appreciates Disney’s support as they commence filming Season 3.

“Disney is truly an artist-driven company,” he stated. “This might sound cliché, but I know these individuals, and it feels as genuine as it did in Walt’s era. They genuinely support creativity. It’s challenging at this scale, but they’ve never restricted our vision.”
