A cherished high school football player from Iowa, celebrated for his compassion and competitive spirit, tragically died after being unintentionally shot during a hunting expedition. His companions mistook him for a squirrel, according to officials.

Carson Ryan, 17, a senior at Washington High School, suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the back of his head while hunting for squirrels on Saturday afternoon in Brighton, near Des Moines, as reported by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

He was immediately transported to the UI Health Care Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

“Carson was a devoted competitor in everything he engaged in,” remarked Washington assistant football coach Nic Williams during a vigil at Washington High School on Sunday, as reported by Southeast Iowa Union.

“He enjoyed fishing and spending time with friends. More importantly, Carson was a person of great faith and affection. He touched many lives, from his mother, Heidi, to his family, friends, teammates, educators, and anyone fortunate enough to know him.”

Several neighboring school districts expressed their grief regarding the sudden loss of Carson on social media and encouraged students and staff to wear the black and orange colors of Washington High to pay tribute to Ryan, an athlete who participated in football, basketball, and track and field.

“The Washington Boys Track & Field team requests you keep Carson’s mom, family, friends, and teammates in your thoughts as we deal with the heartbreaking loss of Carson,” the Washington Demons Boys Track & Field posted on Facebook Sunday.

In addition to his athletic pursuits, Carson was also a member of his school’s homecoming court, as stated on the district’s website.

In response to the tragedy, his family has established a GoFundMe campaign that has raised over $52,600.

“Carson was a son, friend, and a remarkable light to all who knew him,” stated the fundraiser.

“His kindness, sense of humor, and genuine spirit touched an innumerable amount of lives, and his absence leaves a profound void.”

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
