Maria Menounos, a well-known TV host, author, and podcaster, has had her fair share of health challenges over the years. In 2017, she underwent surgery to remove a meningioma, a benign brain tumor, and in 2023, she was diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer of the pancreas. Despite these health setbacks, Menounos has emerged as a vocal advocate for cancer screening and early detection.

After her mother was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme, a type of brain cancer, Menounos began experiencing symptoms herself. She eventually underwent an MRI which revealed a meningioma the size of a golf ball. Following surgery to remove the tumor, Menounos learned the importance of paying attention to her health and taking proactive measures.

In 2022, Menounos started experiencing unexplained symptoms in her abdomen, including bloating and intense pain. Despite initial tests coming back clear, she persisted in finding the cause of her symptoms. A full-body MRI in 2023 revealed a rare form of pancreatic cancer. Menounos underwent surgery to remove the tumor, lymph nodes, spleen, and fibroid, and has since been vigilant about her health and regular screenings.

Menounos’ experiences have driven her to host a podcast called “Heal Squad,” where she shares her health journey and advocates for self-advocacy in healthcare. She has also partnered with Exact Sciences to promote expanded cancer screening, including the development of Cancerguard, a multi-cancer screening blood test. This test can detect biomarkers associated with over 50 types of cancer, including those for which routine screening methods are not currently available.

While no screening test is perfect, Cancerguard offers a sensitivity of around 64%, increasing the chances of early detection for many types of cancer. Menounos’ advocacy for early detection and cancer screening reflects her personal experiences and commitment to helping others navigate the complexities of the healthcare system.

As advancements in multi-cancer early detection tests continue to evolve, individuals like Maria Menounos are using their platforms to raise awareness and promote proactive health measures. By sharing her story and advocating for expanded screening options, Menounos is helping to empower others to take control of their health and potentially save lives.
