Beta Film Secures World Sales Rights for “Other People’s Money” Series
Beta Film has recently acquired the world sales rights to the upcoming drama series “Other People’s Money,” set to have its world premiere at the Berlinale’s Panorama section next month. The series delves into Europe’s largest tax fraud case, where a criminal network of wealthy investors, bankers, and lawyers managed to steal a staggering €146 billion from European taxpayers.
The brainchild behind the series is showrunner Jan Schomburg, known for his work on “I’m Your Man” and “Above Us Only Sky.” The production is in the capable hands of Michael Polle at X Filme Creative Pool, Ole Søndberg at True Content Entertainment, and EPO-Film. The show has received backing from broadcasters ZDF, DR, and New8, a consortium of public broadcasters from northern and western Europe.
“Other People’s Money” joins Beta’s impressive lineup at Berlinale, alongside the opening film “The Light” by Tom Tykwer and the Panorama premiere “Cicadas” by Ina Weisse. The series draws inspiration from the “CumEx-Files” investigation by European media outlets, shedding light on a global financial network that defrauded European state treasuries of billions.
The eight-hour series follows the perpetrators of the fraud, as well as two determined women from different countries striving to expose the scheme. However, their efforts are constantly thwarted by the authorities and financial institutions. The cast includes Lisa Wagner, Karen-Lise Mynster, Justus von Dohnanyi, David Dencik, and Fabian Hinrichs, among others. Directors Dustin Loose and Kaspar Munk lead the creative team, with cinematography by Clemens Baumeister and Laust Trier Mørk.
Funding for the series comes from various sources, including Fisa+, GMPF, the European Union, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, the Nordvisions Fund, and the Croatian Audiovisual Center. “Other People’s Money” promises to be a compelling and insightful exploration of a high-stakes financial scandal that rocked Europe.
