CEO Janeen Wood described the trail as a generational investment that will pave the way for a 530km continuous network across Queenstown and Central Otago, extending all the way to Waihola. Trust chairman Aaron Halstead announced the construction of three new suspension bridges in the new year to ensure the safety of trail users.
The construction process has been a testament to innovation and dedication, with challenges such as building bridges across rivers, airlifting machinery, and navigating tricky terrains. The trail has been carefully designed to blend seamlessly with the natural landscape, featuring stone abutments reminiscent of the region’s early settlers.
Halstead emphasized the economic benefits of cycle tourism, citing the success of trails across New Zealand in generating revenue. The Kawarau Gorge Trail is expected to attract a high number of riders due to its stunning scenery, remote appeal, and proximity to Queenstown.
With the completion of the trail on the horizon, anticipation is building for the positive impact it will have on the region’s tourism industry. Stay tuned for updates on the official opening date and be prepared to experience the beauty of the Kawarau Gorge Trail firsthand.
