Steve Burns Reflects on Internet Rumors Surrounding His Death

Steve Burns, best known for his role as the original host of the popular children’s television show “Blue’s Clues,” recently opened up about the toll that internet rumors have taken on his mental health. During an appearance on Rainn Wilson’s “Soul Bloom” podcast, Burns discussed the lingering online rumor that he had died before completing his tenure on the series in 2002.

“When a rumor like that persists for three or four years, it stops being funny,” Burns shared. “When it persists for 10 years, it feels like a cultural preference. … When it persists for 15 or 20 years, you start to feel like you’re supposed to be.”

Burns portrayed a fictional version of himself on “Blue’s Clues,” engaging directly with viewers in each episode from the show’s debut in 1996. After starring in over 100 episodes across six years, he bid farewell to the series in 2002, introducing his on-screen brother Joe, played by Donovan Patton, as his successor.

Although it’s common for television stars to move on from their roles, Burns’ departure sparked a dark internet rumor suggesting that he had passed away, providing a grim explanation for his exit from the show.

“During the show, the internet was just starting to gain popularity, and a significant portion of the world believed that I had died,” Burns explained. He revealed that he struggled with depression after leaving the series and that the online rumor only worsened his mental state.

“I didn’t recognize myself. Everyone thought I was dead, and eventually, I started playing along with it,” Burns admitted.

In recent years, Burns has actively engaged with fans, addressing the false rumors through his Instagram handle “SteveBurnsAlive.” He has also taken on a more active role in the “Blue’s Clues” revival, directing episodes and starring alongside Donovan Patton in the Paramount+ special “Blue’s Big City Adventure,” released in 2022.
