Bluesky, a social networking startup and decentralized competitor to X, is taking steps to create a platform that fosters more positive interactions and reduces toxicity. The company has introduced new features aimed at curbing abuse and promoting healthier conversations.

One of the key features introduced by Bluesky is the ability to detach your original post from someone’s quote post. This feature limits the potential for users to engage in harmful behavior like dunking on others or sending hate. By allowing users to control the content associated with their posts, Bluesky aims to reduce instances of harassment and dog-piling.

Additionally, Bluesky has rolled out the option to hide replies on your own posts. While the replies remain public, they are placed behind a “Hidden replies” screen, making it less likely for users to engage with spam or unhelpful comments. This feature gives users more control over the conversations happening on their posts.

Another new feature on Bluesky is the ability to enable priority notifications, which allows users to receive notifications only from people they follow. This feature can help users manage their interactions more effectively, especially those with larger followings or posts that are receiving unexpected attention.

In terms of moderation, Bluesky is taking a different approach compared to platforms like X and Facebook. Instead of relying on centralized moderation teams, Bluesky is encouraging the development of labeling and moderation services by offering monetary grants to those interested in building such tools. This decentralized approach aims to empower communities to take control of their own moderation processes.

Looking ahead, Bluesky is considering integrating a Community Notes-like feature in the future. Community Notes on X serve as a form of crowd-sourced fact-checking, helping users identify accurate information through consensus-building algorithms. While Bluesky has not provided a timeline for this feature, it demonstrates the company’s commitment to promoting authenticity and accuracy on its platform.

Overall, Bluesky’s new features are designed to create a safer and more engaging environment for users. By giving users more control over their posts, promoting positive interactions, and exploring innovative moderation strategies, Bluesky is shaping a platform that prioritizes healthy conversations and user empowerment.
