Bodies of Mother and Son Found Buried Alive in Car Near Rhode Island Hospital

The bodies of an elderly woman, Irina Kozak, 75, and her son, Stanislaw Kozak, 49, were tragically discovered buried alive inside their car near a Rhode Island hospital, just weeks after Winter Storm Fern hit the state with heavy snowfall.

The white Kia Sorento, which had been their home for a year, was found submerged in snow on Feb. 11. Irina Kozak was reportedly trapped next to her son’s corpse for more than two weeks before her death.

The mother and son sought shelter in the car outside Miriam Hospital in Providence before the snowstorm hit, dumping up to 20 inches of snow in the region.

On Jan. 28, Irina called a friend to report being trapped in the car at the hospital. The friend called 911, stating that Irina mentioned her son had not moved in two days before they got trapped.

Despite the distress call, police were unable to locate the car until Feb. 11 in a parking lot next to the hospital.

Authorities determined that the deaths were weather-related, with underlying health conditions possibly contributing. The severe winter storm claimed the lives of over 30 people across multiple states.

Providence Police Col. Oscar Perez mentioned that the department is reviewing the response to see if any improvements can be made for future incidents.
