The Roxburgh and Lake Roxburgh Village communities can now breathe a sigh of relief as the boil water notice issued yesterday has been lifted. This notice was implemented after a dead possum was discovered in the Roxburgh reservoir, leaving residents concerned about the safety of their drinking water.
Following the unsettling discovery, the Central Otago District Council took swift action to rectify the situation. Overnight, three times the volume of the water network was flushed through the system, ensuring that clean water from an unaffected temporary reservoir was circulated throughout the town.
Fortunately, testing conducted this morning has confirmed that the water quality now meets all necessary parameters and is deemed safe for consumption. Despite this positive development, the reservoir where the possum was found will remain isolated until full disinfection is carried out and any potential entry points are addressed.
As an added precaution, residents are advised to run their taps for a few minutes to flush out any lingering contaminants from their household plumbing. Water tankers stationed in the town will be removed today, along with public signage pertaining to the boil water notice.
Julie Muir, CODC Group Manager – Three Waters, expressed gratitude towards the local communities for their patience and cooperation during this challenging period. She emphasized that public health remains a top priority, and the council is committed to ensuring that the water supply is always safe for consumption.
With this issue now resolved, residents can once again enjoy the peace of mind that comes with having access to clean and safe drinking water in their homes.
