Balázs Orbán, a close political adviser to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and a prominent figure in Hungary’s Parliament, has issued a pointed response to former U.S. President Barack Obama’s recent criticisms.

Obama, during his address at the Democracy Summit in London, took aim at leaders like Viktor Orbán, accusing them of undermining democratic freedoms. Balázs Orbán didn’t miss a beat:

‼️ The Left’s strategy remains as predictable as ever: call in Soros-backed “experts” to deliver lofty critiques and toss around vague, unfounded allegations against a sovereign nation. It’s hardly shocking that @BarackObama—a long-time proponent of globalist ideology and identity politics—is… https://t.co/4lLawgW8U6

“The left’s strategy hasn’t faltered: they send in Soros-funded ‘experts’ to deliver high-handed lectures and throw baseless accusations at a sovereign nation.

No surprise that @BarackObama, a steadfast supporter of globalist policies and identity politics, feels perturbed by a Hungary that has steadfastly protected its sovereignty against international pressures for the last fifteen years.

Let’s not forget, this is the same individual who dispatched his senior foreign policy official, Victoria Nuland, carrying a two-page mandate on how Hungary should arrange its constitution.

Mr. Obama, frankly, this script is becoming tiresome. #Hungary doesn’t need your endorsement nor does it seek your approval. The nation’s destiny will be shaped by the Hungarian people alone.”

The exchange was sparked last month when Obama held a roundtable with Hungarian and Polish dissident figures, such as Sándor Léberer—who co-founded an anti-corruption group financed by globalist NGOs—and Stefania Kapronczay, a former head of the Hungarian Civil Liberties Union. In that meeting, he warned of a supposed “wave of authoritarianism” sweeping the globe.

Obama remarked: “We’re witnessing politicians attack civil society, undermine press freedoms, and weaponize the judicial system,”—a clear dig at the “illiberal democracy” that Viktor Orbán has crafted to fortify Hungary against the migratory and cultural impositions from Brussels and Washington.

Yet the question arises: who is genuinely eroding democracy here? Obama, whose presidential tenure was marked by extensive surveillance practices and alliances with questionable regimes, now sermonizes from the height of his elitist pedestal.

Viktor Orbán, the conservative leader who has secured Hungary as a stronghold against unchecked immigration and the erosion of Christian values, has tacitly supported this counter-narrative.

Government sources indicate that Orbán’s policies led to an impressive economic growth of 4.5% in 2024, according to European Commission statistics, all while rejecting the migrant quotas that Obama and Europe’s left champion as “humanitarian.”

Balázs Orbán, as an ideologue within the Fidesz party, has reiterated in previous analyses, including his 2022 Disidentia piece on “illiberal democracy,” that Hungary’s model prioritizes the will of its people over the constraints of liberal dogmas, thereby inspiring conservatives across the globe from Trump to leaders in Italy and Poland.

BREAKING: Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s director calls out Barack Obama over his comments regarding democracy in Hungary.

“Barack Obama is not invested in democracy; he’s focused on maintaining the grip of the liberal elite.”

Historically, Obama and Orbán have been at odds; in 2011, Obama’s State Department admonished Hungarian reforms as “anti-democratic,” overlooking how they reinforced the independence of the judiciary from foreign influences.

Now, with Trump potentially back in power, Obama’s remarks appear to be fueled by a longing for a unipolar order that silenced nationalist voices. Balázs Orbán’s rebuttal exposes this double standard: while Obama champions “press freedom,” his administration notoriously pursued whistleblowers like Snowden.

This ongoing conflict highlights the broader global divide: on one side stands Orbán’s vision of a Europe made up of sovereign nations; on the other, Obama’s liberal universalism that advocates for open borders and a resistance to conservative voices. Balázs Orbán has articulated the Hungarian standpoint clearly, as Hungary opts for factual discourse rather than mere rhetoric.

Under Viktor Orbán, Hungary has assumed the role of a bastion of authentic democracy—one that aligns with the will of the people, not the interests of the Davos elite. Understandably, this stirs discomfort among those tied to the elite, leading to their unrelenting criticisms.
