When questioned about whether Keir Starmer maintained his belief that transgender women are real women, a spokesperson from Downing Street unequivocally indicated that he does not.
“No, the Supreme Court ruling has clarified that within the context of the Equality Act, a woman is defined as a biological woman,” the spokesperson stated.
“This is explicitly outlined in the court’s judgment.”
Starmer’s stance has notably shifted from his comments in a March 2022 interview with The Times, where he argued that “a woman is a female adult, and additionally, trans women are women; this is not merely my opinion—it is the law.”
Patrick Hodge, the deputy president of the Supreme Court, was assertive in his recent ruling.
“The unanimous verdict of this court is that the terms ‘woman’ and ‘sex’ in the Equality Act 2010 pertain to biological women and biological sex,” he proclaimed.

“Consequently, an individual holding a Gender Recognition Certificate in the female gender does not meet the legal definition of a ‘woman’ as per the Equality Act 2010, and the statutory guidance issued by the Scottish ministers is inaccurate,” he added.
The Labour government accepted the ruling, claiming it has provided “clarity and confidence” for women regarding single-sex spaces.
“Single-sex spaces are legally protected and will continue to be safeguarded by this government,” a spokesperson affirmed following the decision.
In reaction, transgender activists gathered in central London on Saturday to protest the ruling, during which they vandalized a statue of South African leader Nelson Mandela and called for the execution of the gender-critical author J.K. Rowling.
Additionally, statues of Sir Robert Peel, Benjamin Disraeli, and the suffragist Millicent Fawcett were also targeted during the protests, which took place in Parliament Square, just outside the Houses of Parliament.
