Brothers Sentenced to Prison for Shooting at Family Gathering in Bronzeville

Two brothers have been sentenced to prison for opening fire during a family gathering in Bronzeville that left two women wounded as relatives celebrated a girl’s prom.

Judge Peggy Chiampas sentenced Davion Seaberry, 26, to eight years in prison and his brother, Raequan Seaberry, 27, to 12 years after each pleaded guilty to aggravated battery by discharging a firearm, according to prosecutors and court records.

On the morning of April 8, 2023, the Seaberrys went to the home in the 3800 block of South Indiana Avenue to celebrate their ex-stepfather’s daughter’s prom. The gathering included several family members and children as young as 12 weeks old.

During the party, Davion allegedly began yelling at a woman and threatened to kill his ex-stepfather when the stepfather intervened. He allegedly slapped the man’s 32-year-old daughter, pulled a gun from his waistband, and pointed it at her. The stepfather, who holds a concealed carry license, drew his own firearm in response, prosecutors said.

As the men struggled, Raequan and others allegedly grabbed the stepfather’s arm to prevent him from using his weapon. Davion then fired, striking the 32-year-old woman in the thigh, prosecutors said. They said family members scrambled to take cover as the stepfather exchanged gunfire with the Seaberry brothers. A third man who accompanied them allegedly joined in with a rifle but has not been identified or charged.

Prosecutors said Raequan then saw the stepfather’s 39-year-old daughter hiding near a parked car and shot her in the leg as she ran for safety. Her thigh bone shattered, requiring surgeons to implant a permanent rod, according to court filings. Prosecutors said the woman managed to record a brief cellphone video showing both brothers firing their weapons.

At the time of the shooting, Davion was already on pretrial release for a fentanyl-dealing charge, prosecutors said. After the shooting, but before he was charged in the case, he was accused in a separate vehicular invasion and stolen vehicle case. Judge Chiampas sentenced him to a concurrent 12-year term for the vehicular invasion, while prosecutors dropped the narcotics matter.

Both men must serve at least 85 percent of their sentences. With credit for time spent in custody, Raequan Seaberry is expected to be paroled in October 2029, while Davion is scheduled for release in August 2033.
