A shocking incident unfolded at Sydney International Airport on Tuesday when a 90-year-old passenger was allegedly punched in the face by a man, resulting in his arrest and a subsequent no-fly ban on two major airlines.
According to a bystander named James, who witnessed the altercation at the departures terminal around 4 p.m., the attacker first punched the elderly man in the stomach before turning his aggression towards a Qantas staff member who tried to intervene. James described the attacker as a “gentleman of a large nature” who displayed unacceptable behavior.
It took 10 passengers to subdue the attacker and bring him to the ground, as he continued to lash out at those around him. The Airspace Flow Program (AFP) eventually arrived on the scene and charged the 37-year-old New Zealand national with assaulting three people at the airport.
The man allegedly assaulted an airline employee and two other individuals before being restrained by the crowd until police arrived. He was subsequently arrested and taken to Mascot police station for questioning. Following a mental health assessment, he was transferred to a hospital in Randwick before being released into police custody.
The man now faces charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and common assault, with maximum penalties of five years and two years of imprisonment, respectively. He was denied bail and is scheduled to appear in Downing Centre Local Court on April 2.
In response to the incident, a Qantas spokesperson emphasized that the safety of their staff and customers is paramount, and they have a zero-tolerance policy for abusive or violent behavior. The perpetrator has been issued a no-fly ban that applies to both Qantas and Jetstar flights.
The staff member who was involved in the altercation sustained minor injuries, which were treated by paramedics on-site. Sydney Airport Police Commander Davina Copelin reiterated the importance of ensuring the safety of the community, including airline workers, at Australian airports. The AFP is committed to intervening in cases of aggressive or violent behavior to maintain a secure environment for all passengers and staff.
