Exciting News for Buffy the Vampire Slayer Fans!
In every generation, there is a chosen one — again. Variety has learned from sources that a sequel series to the beloved show “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” is nearing a pilot order at Hulu.
Sources say that Sarah Michelle Gellar is in final talks to once again play the iconic title character in the untitled project, although it would focus on a new Slayer and Gellar would appear in a recurring role rather than leading the series.
The creative team behind the new series includes Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman as writers, showrunners, and executive producers. Acclaimed director Chloé Zhao is attached to direct and executive produce under her Book of Shadows production banner. Gellar, along with Gail Berman, Fran Kuzui, Kaz Kuzui, and Dolly Parton, will also serve as executive producers. 20th Television and Searchlight Television will produce the show.
Notably absent from the team is Joss Whedon, the creator of the original series. Whedon faced allegations of creating a toxic work environment on “Buffy” and its spinoff “Angel” by several individuals associated with the shows, including actress Charisma Carpenter. Despite Whedon’s absence, the new series is shaping up to be a fresh take on the beloved franchise.
“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” originally started as a film in 1992 before the hit TV series premiered in 1997. The show, known for its strong female lead and innovative storytelling, quickly became a cult favorite and is often hailed as one of the best television shows of all time.
Sarah Michelle Gellar, who rose to fame as Buffy, has had a successful career in both TV and film. Along with her role in “Buffy,” she has appeared in shows like “Ringer” and “The Crazy Ones,” as well as films like “Cruel Intentions” and “The Grudge.”
The new series will be a welcome addition to Hulu’s lineup of revivals, joining other reboots like “Prison Break” and new episodes of “Futurama.” Fans of the original “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” series can look forward to a fresh take on the beloved story with a talented team behind the scenes.
