Suspects Arrested After Series of Robberies Near Wrigley Field, Southport Corridor, and Bridgeport
Good news to report: Two suspects are in custody after people were robbed near Wrigley Field, in the Southport Corridor, and in Bridgeport overnight. The suspects are believed to be responsible for all three holdups.
Robberies Near Wrigley Field and Southport Corridor
The crimes began shortly after 1 a.m. near Clifton and Grace in Wrigleyville. A woman who lives in the neighborhood said two men, one wearing a ski mask, took her phone and other items, made her unlock her phone, and then fled in a white car.
Just minutes later, a couple was robbed at gunpoint a few blocks away near Southport and Roscoe. They told police two men took their valuables at gunpoint and drove away in a white car. The victims hid in a gangway until police arrived.
Robbery in Bridgeport
Then, around 1:43 a.m., a 27-year-old woman was robbed in the 3000 block of South Wentworth. She reported that two men got out of a white Volkswagen sedan and demanded her property at gunpoint, a Chicago police spokesperson said.
They battered the woman in her face and leg, then took her property by force, according to CPD. She declined medical treatment.
Arrest of Suspects
Using CPD’s network of cameras and license plate readers, cops began tracking a Volkswagen with Massachusetts plates as it traveled around the city, wandering from Andersonville to the South Side.
Along the way, state troopers intercepted the vehicle and ultimately arrested two suspects at 79th and State Street, according to a source.
As of Sunday morning, CPD’s press office had no information about the arrests.
Further Investigations
Detectives will also be looking to see if the suspects are responsible for robbing two other people in Wrigleyville early Friday morning. In that case, a 22-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman were seated in a car on Roscoe Street just west of Sheffield Avenue when two men approached them around 1:07 a.m. The men threatened the victims with weapons and asked for their belongings.
But the robbery took an even more violent turn when one of the masked men struck the woman in the head and face, reportedly with a handgun.
Both robbers climbed into a white vehicle, possibly a Nissan sedan, and drove away.
