Chinese electric car manufacturer BYD made a groundbreaking announcement on February 10, 2025, revealing its integration of DeepSeek technology into its artificial intelligence model powering its latest driver-assistance technology. This move marks a significant shift in BYD’s approach to autonomous driving technology, as the company had previously taken a more cautious stance.

BYD’s shares surged to a record high in Hong Kong trading following the announcement, with a more than 4% increase to reach an all-time high of 345 Hong Kong dollars ($44.24) before slightly retracting. The stock had already experienced a significant 21% surge the previous week leading up to the event on February 10.

During a China-focused launch event livestreamed on Monday, BYD’s founder and chairman Wang Chuanfu emphasized that advanced smart driving features would soon become a standard safety component akin to seatbelts and airbags. The company unveiled its “DiPilot” assisted driving system across its vehicle lineup, including a budget-friendly model priced at 69,800 yuan ($9,555).

Nomura analysts highlighted that BYD is likely the first automaker in China to offer such advanced driver-assistance capabilities for a vehicle priced below 70,000 yuan. They noted that BYD’s strategic shift from price-cutting to feature enhancement in 2025 signifies a significant change in its competitive strategy.

Moreover, BYD announced its collaboration with Chinese startup DeepSeek to integrate their artificial intelligence technology into the most advanced version of the new driver-assistance system. This integration will enable BYD to offer intelligent features equivalent to those of its competitors, positioning the company at the forefront of technological innovation in the automotive industry.

Tu Le, founder and managing director of Sino Auto Insights, emphasized the significance of the DeepSeek integration, stating that it puts BYD in a leading position to drive technological advancements in the market. He highlighted that BYD had previously lagged behind its Chinese competitors in terms of advanced driver-assistance features.

The implementation of smart driving technology by BYD aims to enhance road safety by monitoring road conditions and preventing potential hazards. The company introduced over 20 models featuring the new driver-assistance system during the launch event, demonstrating its commitment to innovation and technological advancement.

While BYD strengthens its position in the driver-assistance market, regulatory restrictions in China have posed challenges for other automakers. Tesla, for instance, continues to await approval for its “Full-Self Driving” technology in China, citing regulatory complexities and compliance issues as reasons for the delay.

Despite the competitive edge gained through the DeepSeek integration, analysts caution that BYD may face challenges entering Western markets like the U.S. due to national security concerns. As BYD continues to push the boundaries of innovation in the automotive industry, its collaboration with DeepSeek signifies a new era of advanced driver-assistance technology that promises to revolutionize the driving experience for consumers worldwide.
