The California high school athletics governing body has made adjustments to eligibility rules for the upcoming track and field championship meet in response to President Trump’s threat to cut federal funding if transgender athletes are allowed to compete in women’s sports.

The competition, scheduled for this weekend, will now include “any biological female student-athlete” who initially did not qualify due to the participation of transgender athletes.

The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) made the decision to expand the field before Trump’s recent remarks. The CIF stated that they value all student-athletes and are committed to providing opportunities while complying with California law.

The CIF announced a pilot entry process for the 2025 CIF State Track and Field Championships to address the issue. This process allows additional female student-athletes to participate in the event.

Despite the rule change, transgender athletes will still be able to compete and receive medals in the tournament.

California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office supported the CIF’s decision, calling it a reasonable approach to a complex issue without compromising fairness.

CIF claims it made the decision several days before Trump's post Tuesday.

Trump’s previous executive order threatened to withhold federal funding from states that allow transgender athletes to compete in women’s sports. The Department of Education is currently investigating CIF for this issue.
