California Files Lawsuit Against San Diego Children’s Hospital Over Gender-Affirming Care

The state of California is taking legal action against Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego after the hospital ceased providing “gender-affirming care” to minors in order to comply with guidance from the Trump administration.

Attorney General Rob Bonta has filed a lawsuit against Rady Children’s Hospital, alleging that the hospital violated the terms of a merger agreement with Children’s Hospital of Orange County, as reported by KCRA3.

Rady Children’s Hospital stated that they made the decision to discontinue gender-affirming care for minors after facing threats from the Trump administration to withdraw funding and potentially shut down the hospital for providing such care to patients under 18.

In a statement, the hospital described the decision as “very difficult” but necessary to protect its overall pediatric services and fulfill its responsibilities as a nonprofit pediatric healthcare system.

Last year, a coalition of 19 states and the District of Columbia filed a lawsuit against the Department of Health and Human Services after the department deemed puberty blockers, hormone therapy, and surgeries for minors as unsafe and ineffective.
