Cameron Kasky, a vocal survivor of the tragic 2018 Parkland High School shooting, made a significant announcement on Tuesday by declaring his candidacy for Congress. In a heartfelt video shared on social media, Kasky expressed his intention to focus on enacting laws that benefit all Americans, emphasizing the struggles faced by everyday families in areas such as rent and healthcare expenses. He criticized the prioritization of wealth over genuine solutions like social housing and Medicare For All, highlighting issues such as Palantir mass surveillance contracts and the actions of ICE.

Reflecting on his activism since his teenage years, Kasky recounted challenging members of the Trump administration and engaging in political discourse following the Parkland shooting that claimed 17 lives and injured 18 others. Together with fellow survivors, Kasky co-founded Never Again MSD, a student-led organization advocating for gun control and leading initiatives like the March For Our Lives protest. His involvement in politics was spurred by the tragic events at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, where he was a junior at the time of the shooting.

Kasky’s decision to run for Congress in New York’s 12th Congressional District aligns with his dedication to effecting change and addressing systemic issues. He emphasized the importance of grassroots movements and genuine beliefs over traditional qualifications, outlining policy priorities such as opposing AI, supporting Medicare for All, abolishing ICE, and ending conflicts like the war in Gaza. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Kasky positioned himself as a Democratic socialist focused on substantive policy goals rather than his youth.

As Kasky embarks on this political journey, he seeks support from individuals who share his vision for a more inclusive and equitable society. His campaign represents a shift towards outsider candidates who prioritize values and principles over conventional political credentials, signaling a broader movement towards authentic representation and meaningful change in the political landscape.
