The Yellowstone franchise has broadened its horizons on CBS with the introduction of Marshals, experiencing significant changes such as cast alterations and an unexpected offscreen death.

Initially launched with Taylor Sheridan‘s acclaimed series Yellowstone in 2018, the Paramount+ franchise introduced audiences to the Dutton family, including key characters Kayce (Luke Grimes) and Monica (Kelsey Asbille), who remained central until the show’s conclusion.

Monica transitioned from teaching at a local school on the Broken Rock Indian Reservation to becoming a professor at Montana State University, all while managing life with Kayce. The couple returned to the Yellowstone Ranch after Kayce’s earlier conflicts with his father, John (Kevin Costner).

The original series concluded in 2024 and later expanded its universe with Grimes’ CBS show Marshals and Dutton Ranch. Marshals quickly gained popularity upon its CBS debut in 2026, stunning fans with the revelation of Monica’s death.

The Yellowstone cast has continued to find success after the hit Paramount Network show came to an end — with some even scoring spinoffs. Yellowstone, which ran from 2018 to 2024, became an overnight success for its story about the conflicts along the shared border of a large cattle ranch, the Broken Rock Indian reservation […]

According to Puck, the development of Marshals encountered challenges in differentiating it from the original series centered on Kayce’s life post-Yellowstone. To avoid similarities with the flagship show, Marshals opted to exclude Monica from the storyline, transforming the series into a fast-paced procedural.

The newsletter also reported that Paramount engaged in extensive legal consultations to ensure that other Yellowstone key characters, Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser), could feature in their Dutton Ranch spinoff without legal complications arising from narrative similarity. CBS and Paramount have not publicly addressed the Puck report.

As season 2 approaches, here are the details on the changes in Marshals:

When Marshals premiered in March 2026, it revealed the shocking news that Kayce’s wife, Monica, had succumbed to cancer. Showrunner Spencer Hudnut explained to TVLine, “Kayce had such a perfect ending in Yellowstone. His dreams had finally come true. As we were trying to figure out how to tell the next chapter in Kayce’s story, it felt like he really needed to be shaken out of that. Unfortunately, tragedy tends to find Kayce, so something bad was going to happen for him one way or the other. It just sort of played out that it was going to be Monica.”

Hudnut added that Monica’s death would continue to influence Kayce’s journey, stating, “To me, Monica is really guiding Kayce through this first episode, trying to help him find his new path. And if you actually break it down, Tate is at that rally to honor his mother, and Kayce goes there to protect Tate. So if not for Monica, Kayce never would have been in that position and may not have found this path.”

He concluded, “We really wanted to be respectful of the way that we said goodbye to her. I also didn’t want to step on the ending of Yellowstone, because what they had was a beautiful ending. Unfortunately, real life intervened.”

Kelsey Asbille has yet to comment on Monica’s onscreen death, but she has permitted her likeness to be used, allowing Marshals to include images of the character.

Finale Concerns

In the season 1 finale, aired in May 2026, Andrea (Ash Santos) was presented with a job opportunity in Washington, D.C., while Arielle Kebbel and Cal (Logan Marshall-Green) were ambushed on a mission, involving Tom Weaver (Chris Mulkey) in a potentially deadly scenario.

In the first look for season 2, characters such as Kayce, Miles (Tatanka Means), Andrea, and Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) appeared, but Cal and Belle were noticeably absent.

The fate of Belle and Cal remains uncertain, despite the renewal for season 2. However, Marshall-Green and Kebbel hinted to The Hollywood Reporter that they have started filming for the new season.

As confirmed by Deadline in August 2026, the spinoff will feature more scenes with Cal’s estranged daughter, Maddie (Morgan Lindholm). The character, introduced in season 1 as a bartender with a surprising link to Cal, will see her role expanded. Her relationship with Miles will also be further explored.

Additionally, the show has cast Marque Richardson in a recurring role as Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick Burns.
