“Catfish: The TV Show” has officially come to an end.

The reality television series that delved into deceptive online relationships has been canceled by MTV after an impressive nine-season run, as reported by Variety. However, the network has consented to let the producers seek new opportunities to continue the series elsewhere, while also assuring fans that episodes from the extensive “Catfish” library will remain available for airing on MTV.

Hosted by Nev Schulman, “Catfish” played a pivotal role in helping individuals confront the truth behind their dubious digital romances. Often, these revelations led to poignant encounters with the individuals behind the screens. The show was inspired by Schulman’s 2010 documentary that first introduced the term “catfish,” describing someone who creates a false identity or misuses images to mislead others online.

Created by Schulman, along with Ariel Schulman and Max Joseph, “Catfish: The TV Show” premiered on MTV in 2012 and concluded its journey with Season 9 in July 2024. For the initial seven seasons, Schulman co-hosted with Joseph, until 2018, when Joseph was replaced by a variety of guest hosts, including Elle King, Nick Young, and Machine Gun Kelly. Eventually, Kamie Crawford became the permanent co-host, sharing the screen with Schulman for a total of 96 episodes.

The impact of “Catfish” extended beyond its viewership; it defined the digital deception phenomenon and inspired multiple international adaptations spanning Colombia, Chile, Brazil, Mexico, and the United Kingdom. Its influence can still be seen today—with recent content like an episode of “The Paper” focusing on an employee being catfished by a celebrity impersonator, and Netflix’s hit documentary titled “Unknown Number: The High School Catfish.”

Following the conclusion of Season 9, there were uncertainties surrounding the future of “Catfish: The TV Show,” especially with MTV not renewing or officially canceling the series amidst the restructuring following the Paramount merger. Recently, Schulman announced a new venture, having acquired his real estate broker’s license, where he intends to assist individuals in buying and selling properties in New York.
