The future of CBS News hangs in the balance as the Paramount Skydance unit contemplates a potential round of layoffs, with cuts potentially affecting at least 15% of the current staff. Editor in chief Bari Weiss is spearheading this initiative to pivot the news division towards streaming video and offering a broader range of perspectives to viewers.

While CBS News has declined to comment on the matter, sources familiar with the situation reveal that discussions surrounding layoffs are ongoing and could materialize as early as March or as late as May. Some employees have already opted for buyout packages, with 11 producers from “CBS Evening News” choosing to exit the organization.

During a recent town hall meeting, Weiss emphasized the need for CBS News to focus on producing original content that sets them apart from other news outlets. She highlighted the importance of authenticity and uniqueness in a media landscape where trust in institutions is waning. As part of this strategy, CBS News has brought on new hires, including podcasters specializing in niche topics like politics and medical health.

However, one of the new contributors, longevity guru Peter Attia, has come under scrutiny due to his ties to Jeffrey Epstein. Despite calls to remove Attia from the roster, Weiss has maintained her support for him. The restructuring at CBS News is part of a broader trend within Paramount Skydance, as the conglomerate grapples with declining cable networks and the rise of streaming platforms.

While CBS News faces challenges in terms of viewership and advertising revenue, iconic programs like “60 Minutes” and “CBS Sunday Morning” continue to attract audiences. The key question remains whether a leaner CBS News team can effectively produce content for both traditional television and streaming platforms like Paramount+. As the industry evolves, Weiss’s vision for CBS News will be put to the test in the coming months.
