Following a tragic incident at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) headquarters last Friday, newly appointed director Susan Monarez addressed agency employees in an effort to reassure them of their safety and the continuation of their important mission. The meeting, however, was marred by technical issues and a lack of key leadership presence, leaving some employees feeling dissatisfied with the response.

Despite the chaotic nature of the meeting, Monarez emphasized the importance of unity and trust within the CDC community. She acknowledged the challenges posed by misinformation and political debates that have eroded public trust in the agency. Monarez stressed the need for evidence-based discourse and compassion in facing these challenges together.

During the meeting, Monarez mentioned the fundraising efforts by the CDC Foundation to support the family of the officer killed in the attack, David Rose. She highlighted the resilience of the CDC staff in the face of adversity and reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to its core mission.

The attack, carried out by a gunman who blamed a Covid vaccination for his health issues, resulted in extensive damage to CDC buildings and caused fear among employees. The shooter, identified as Patrick Joseph White, targeted multiple buildings on the campus before taking his own life.

Despite the swift response by security personnel, some CDC staff reported not receiving timely alerts about the incident, raising concerns about communication protocols and safety measures. The incident has prompted discussions within the agency about enhancing security measures and ensuring the well-being of employees.

In the aftermath of the attack, Monarez and other CDC officials have been working to address staff concerns and improve security protocols. The incident has underscored the importance of solidarity and preparedness in the face of unexpected threats.
