Cecilia Giménez, the Spanish artist who gained worldwide fame for her unconventional restoration of a church fresco known as “Ecce Homo,” has passed away at the age of 94. The news of her death was confirmed by Eduardo Arilla, the mayor of Borja, the town where the fresco is located.

In 2012, Giménez took it upon herself to restore the deteriorating fresco of Jesus Christ painted by Elías García Martínez in the Santuario de Misericordia church. However, her interpretation of the restoration resulted in a cartoonish and distorted version of the original artwork. Initially seen as a failure, the fresco soon gained popularity online, with many viewing it as a quirky and charming creation in its own right.

The viral success of the “Ecce Homo” restoration brought a surge of tourists to Borja, boosting the town’s economy and creating a unique cultural phenomenon. Merchandise featuring the image, including pillows and mugs, became popular souvenirs, and the fresco inspired various forms of artistic expression, such as an opera and Halloween costumes.

Born in 1931, Giménez was a self-taught artist who mainly painted landscapes and performed minor touch-ups at religious buildings. Described as kind and compassionate by the Borja City Council, she was a devoted mother and a resilient individual who faced challenges with courage and determination throughout her life.

The news of Giménez’s passing has sparked an outpouring of tributes from around the world, highlighting the lasting impact she had on people from diverse backgrounds. Artists and fans have expressed their love and admiration for her, recognizing her as a unique and influential figure in the art world.

She leaves behind a story of resilience, creativity, and the power of art to unite and inspire people from all walks of life. Her unique contribution to the art world will continue to be celebrated and remembered for years to come.
