The enigma surrounding the peculiar blinking objects scattered throughout the Milky Way has just deepened with a groundbreaking discovery. Located 15,000 light-years away from the Sun, these mysterious objects are not only emitting radio waves but also blasting out X-ray emissions, a phenomenon that has left scientists baffled.

“This object is unlike anything we have seen before,” stated astronomer Ziteng (Andy) Wang from the Curtin University node of the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) in Australia. For several years, powerful radio telescopes in the Australian desert have been capturing observations of these strange objects, which emit long pulses of radio waves with significant intervals between each emission.

The latest discovery, named ASKAP J1832-0911, emits a two-minute pulse every 44 minutes, consisting of both radio waves and X-rays. This unique behavior was unveiled through simultaneous observations made by the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder radio telescope and NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory, shedding light on the object’s peculiar emissions.

The luminosity of the radio and X-ray emissions from ASKAP J1832-0911 are correlated, indicating a compact source that only recently became active in November 2023. Speculations suggest that the object could be a magnetar or a pair of stars in a binary system, but these theories fail to fully explain the observed phenomena. This discovery may signify a new realm of physics or novel models of stellar evolution.

Despite the uncertainties, the presence of X-rays in addition to radio signals from ASKAP J1832-0911 raises questions about the nature of other long-period transients (LPTs). The possibility of more objects exhibiting similar X-ray emissions could unravel the mysterious nature of these enigmatic entities.

The researchers emphasize that the discovery of ASKAP J1832-0911’s transient X-ray emission opens up new avenues for understanding these intriguing celestial phenomena. Published in Nature, this groundbreaking research marks a significant leap forward in unraveling the mysteries of the universe.
