Scalies gained recognition for his portrayal of dockworker and union member Thomas âHorsefaceâ Pakusa on The Wire, appearing in every episode of the showâs second season in 2003. In a 2019 interview, Scalies mentioned that the character of Horseface always lived inside him and he would bring him out as needed.
On The Sopranos, Scalies played a high school sports coach who appeared in a dream sequence alongside James Gandolfini. He once humorously remarked to a local reporter, âIâm a good actor. I can sweat on cue.â
Aside from his acting career, Scalies was a dedicated family man. His public obituary described him as a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Angeline M. Scalies, and their five children and grandchildren.
