Charlie Hunnam Through the Years: From Sons of Anarchy to Now

Charlie Hunnam began his acting career on the British TV series Byker Grove in the late 1990s after being discovered in Newcastle upon Tyne on Christmas Eve.


Hunnam recounted a time he was “dancing around” a store while picking out sneakers for his brother’s gift when he noticed a woman watching him. In an October 2025 interview with Variety, he recalled, “So I blew her a kiss, just being the cheeky young man that I was.” The woman was Elizabeth Binns, the production manager for Byker Grove.


He took part in various other projects, such as Queer as Folk, Undeclared, and Green Street Hooligans, before rising to fame as Jax Teller, the leader of a motorcycle club in Sons of Anarchy, a role he portrayed from 2008 to 2014.


“I would look back at those early episodes and think I didn’t know what the hell I was doing. I didn’t have a very developed skill set,” Hunnam expressed to Variety in a September 2025 feature. “I feel really proud of seasons 6 and 7, as though my work had finally caught up to the level of my aspirations.”


After his time as Jax ended, Hunnam continued acting and gained renewed popularity when he starred as serial killer Ed Gein in season 3 of Netflix’s Monsters, which premiered in October 2025.
