Noah Wyle, star of “The Pitt,” and its creator R. Scott Gemmill have addressed the unexpected departure of Supriya Ganesh, who portrayed senior resident Dr. Samira Mohan, as the series concludes its second season.

“This is an inevitable aspect of the show each season because we, as writers, struggle to balance the timeline while maintaining the ensemble’s realism,” Wyle explained during the PaleyFest screening and panel for “The Pitt” in Los Angeles. “Emergency rooms experience high turnover. We continuously strive to introduce new characters or elevate existing ones to keep the narrative engaging, but Supriya has undeniably been integral to our show from the start.”

“Dr. Mohan is a cherished character, and working with Supriya has been a joy. We wish her success in her future endeavors and will certainly miss her,” he added.

Although Ganesh was initially scheduled to attend PaleyFest, she announced on social media that she would not be present. “Hi everyone, not sure why it’s not removed off the site but I will not be at PaleyFest this Sunday,” she wrote. “I know some of you bought tickets to see me and I hope you know this is not a decision I take lightly. Love you all.”

Variety’s Joe Otterson revealed Ganesh’s departure on April 2, citing a source who described the decision as story-driven. Given that Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center serves as a teaching hospital, it is normal for residents to come and go. Throughout Season 2, Dr. Mohan has explored the next steps in her career as her residency concludes.

On the PaleyFest red carpet, Gemmill remarked, “This is the nature of the show. In the medical field, you come in, learn, and then move on, and we aim to reflect that reality as closely as possible. We will continue to refresh our cast, and I believe it’s an excellent opportunity for growth, which is the best we can offer.”

After the premiere of Season 1, Ganesh shared, “I never thought I would find my break in something as artistically and creatively rewarding as ‘The Pitt.’ It felt like a culmination of my life’s experiences. Even during my audition and callbacks, it seemed like there was a guiding force. A bird pooped on me, which Indians consider lucky.”

It was confirmed alongside Ganesh’s exit that Ayesha Harris, who portrays senior night shift resident Dr. Parker Ellis, will be promoted to a series regular for the third season.

Gemmill also mentioned that Season 3 will begin filming in June and is set to take place in November to incorporate “colder weather” into the storylines.
