On Sunday, September 21, a public memorial service for the late Charlie Kirk took place, where his wife, Erika Kirk (née Frantzve), extended forgiveness to the individual believed to be responsible for her husband’s untimely death.
“I forgive him because that is what Christ did,” Erika, 36, declared amidst her poignant remarks at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. “The solution to hatred is not more hatred.”
She encouraged the attendees to embody the transformative principles espoused by her husband in their own relationships, particularly within the sacred bounds of marriage.
“Please strive to be a leader worthy of being followed,” she implored the vast audience. “Understand this: your wife is not your servant, your employee, nor your subjugate. She is your partner. You are not adversaries; you are one entity, united in your purpose for the glory of God.”
Charlie, the founder of the right-leaning organization Turning Point USA and an influential conservative voice, was tragically shot on September 10 while addressing students at Utah Valley University. He was just 31 years old.
In a subsequent X livestream, Erika shared a heartfelt reflection, stating, “Charlie was full of zest for life. He adored his family, cherished America, and found solace in nature, which deepened his connection to God. He was an avid supporter of the Chicago Cubs and had a particular fondness for the Oregon Ducks.”
Erika further expressed that Charlie’s role as a father was paramount to him. “He loved our children immensely and made sure I knew he loved me wholeheartedly, each and every day. He would ask, ‘How can I serve you better? How can I be a better husband? How can I support our children effectively?’” she reminisced, amplifying his remarkable character as a devoted family man.
She also shared a touching account of how their children were coping with the loss. “When I returned home one evening, our daughter rushed into my arms, declaring, ‘Mommy, I miss you.’ I replied, ‘I miss you too, dear,’ and she innocently inquired, ‘Where’s Daddy?’ How does a mother explain such a loss to a three-year-old? I said, ‘Daddy loves you so much, sweetheart; he’s on a work trip with Jesus so he can manage your blueberry budget.’”
Having been appointed as the new CEO of Turning Point, Erika has openly reflected on her final moments with Charlie, revealing the emotional depths of their relationship and the struggles faced thereafter.
During an interview with The New York Times, Erika recounted her visceral experience seeing Charlie’s body in its final repose. “His eyes were slightly open,” she noted, reflecting on the half-smile that graced his visage as if to suggest he had met his fate with peace—“like he had been saved, and in that moment between life and death, he had found joy.”
Although Erika had intended to accompany Charlie to Utah for the lecture, she remained in Arizona to support her mother during a hospitalization. Upon receiving the devastating news from Charlie’s assistant, she immediately boarded a flight to Utah.
Reflecting on that fateful journey, she shared, “As I looked out at the clouds and mountains, I thought about the beauty of the day—how picturesque it was, almost surreal, as if it were the last thing he had ever seen.”
