OpenAI Launches App Review Process for ChatGPT
App developers seeking to integrate their programs with ChatGPT can now submit them for review and potential publication, as announced by OpenAI on Wednesday. The company has also unveiled a new app directory feature within Chat’s tools menu, affectionately referred to as an “app store” by users.
In a move to expand the capabilities of ChatGPT, OpenAI introduced apps to its chatbot back in October. This initiative garnered support from major platforms such as Expedia, Spotify, Zillow, and Canva, enabling users to access these services directly from Chat conversations. Now, OpenAI is opening the doors to a wider range of developers to participate in this ecosystem.
According to OpenAI, “Apps enhance ChatGPT conversations by introducing new context and enabling users to perform actions like ordering groceries, converting an outline into a slide deck, or searching for an apartment.”
The Apps SDK provided by OpenAI, still in beta phase, serves as a development toolkit for creators looking to enhance the ChatGPT user experience. Once developers have finalized their apps, they can submit them through the OpenAI Developer platform, where they can monitor the approval process. OpenAI anticipates that several approved apps will be rolled out within Chat over the next year.
This move marks a significant stride for OpenAI in expanding the app ecosystem within ChatGPT, offering users more functionalities and incentives to engage with the platform.
