OpenAI Introduces GPT-5.3 Instant: A Solution to ChatGPT’s Cringeworthy Responses

If you’re tired of ChatGPT constantly treating you like you’re in crisis mode, you’re not alone. OpenAI has heard the feedback loud and clear and is rolling out a new model, GPT-5.3 Instant, to address the issue of “cringe” and other preachy disclaimers.

The focus of the GPT-5.3 update is on enhancing the user experience by improving tone, relevance, and conversational flow. While these aspects may not be reflected in traditional benchmarks, they play a crucial role in making ChatGPT more user-friendly and less frustrating.

OpenAI’s example showcases the difference between responses from the GPT-5.2 Instant model and the new GPT-5.3 Instant model. The previous version often started with phrases like “First of all — you’re not broken,” which has irked many users. In contrast, the updated model acknowledges the challenges without resorting to direct reassurances.

The overly comforting tone of ChatGPT’s 5.2 model has led some users to cancel their subscriptions due to the condescending nature of the responses. The bot’s habit of assuming users are in a state of panic or stress, even when they’re just seeking information, has been a point of contention among users.

Users have expressed feeling infantilized or misunderstood by ChatGPT’s attempts at reassurance, especially when it wasn’t warranted. As one Reddit user aptly pointed out, telling someone to “calm down” has never actually resulted in them calming down.

While it’s important for AI models like ChatGPT to have guardrails in place to prevent negative mental health effects, OpenAI recognizes the need for a balance between empathy and providing factual information. After all, when you search on Google, it doesn’t inquire about your emotional state.

With the introduction of GPT-5.3 Instant, OpenAI aims to address the concerns raised by users and improve the overall user experience. By reducing the cringe factor and focusing on enhancing tone and relevance, ChatGPT is set to become a more user-friendly and less patronizing conversational partner.
