In a statement to the L.A. County Superior Court, Cher emphasized that the elephants have spent more than enough time in captivity and deserve a chance to experience peace and dignity.
Cher, a long-time advocate for animal rights, has been a vocal supporter of Billy, Tina, and other animals. She firmly believes that a sanctuary, not another zoo, is the appropriate place for these elephants to thrive.
Animal rights activists have criticized the L.A. Zoo for the inadequate living conditions of the elephants, which have been detrimental to their health.
Following the euthanasia of elephants Jewel, 61, and Shaunzi, 53, due to age-related health issues, Billy and Tina remain the only elephants at the L.A. Zoo, living separately in a 6.5-acre habitat.
Despite criticisms, L.A. Zoo officials defend their care of Billy and Tina, stating that the elephants were in good health at the time of the announcement regarding their transfer to the Tulsa Zoo.
Billy and Tina are set to join five other Asian elephants in Tulsa, with L.A. Zoo Director Denise Verret expressing confidence that the move will provide them with the opportunity to “thrive” in the company of other elephants.
