Chevy Chase, the beloved comedian, faced a life-threatening ordeal in 2021 when he experienced heart failure during the pandemic. A new documentary titled “I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not,” set to premiere on CNN on Jan. 1, sheds light on the harrowing experience that the 82-year-old actor went through.
According to Chase’s daughter, Caley Chase, her father “has basically come back from the dead” after spending five weeks in the hospital due to undisclosed heart issues. His wife, Jayni Chase, revealed that Chevy had cardiomyopathy, a condition where the heart muscles weaken, leading to heart failure and other serious complications.
During his hospitalization, Chase was put into a coma for approximately eight days to stabilize his condition. His longtime friend, Peter Aaron, shared that it was a challenging time for Chevy as he struggled to reorient himself after waking up from the coma. Despite facing cognitive disabilities, Chase worked diligently to regain his mental faculties through activities like playing cards and chess.
The documentary also delves into the impact of the coma on Chevy’s memory, with both Aaron and Chevy himself acknowledging memory gaps as a result of the ordeal. Chevy candidly admitted that his memory had been affected by the incident, leading to moments of forgetfulness and disorientation.
Throughout the documentary, Chevy reflects on past events from his career, including his time on “Saturday Night Live” and “Community.” He expressed hurt over being excluded from the SNL 50th anniversary special, revealing that he felt overlooked and unappreciated by not being invited to participate in the celebration.
Despite the challenges he faced, Chevy Chase remains optimistic about his recovery and grateful for the support of his family. He emphasized the importance of being reminded of things due to his memory issues and expressed his gratitude for being back home with his loved ones.
The documentary offers a rare glimpse into Chevy Chase’s personal struggles and triumphs, showcasing the resilience and determination of a comedy legend who has faced life-threatening health crises with courage and humor.
