Shootings in Chicago over the weekend resulted in 23 people wounded and two people dead, marking the fewest victims for the same period since at least 2015, according to HeyJackass, an independent site that tracks city crime data using open-source and official databases. The victims, consisting of 20 men and 5 women, were between the ages of 18 and 65.

In a positive turn of events, no children were shot, and there were no mass shootings reported during the weekend. However, one particularly bold attack involved three masked gunmen ambushing an off-duty Chicago police officer in Back of the Yards early Sunday morning. The officer, aged 30, sustained a minor injury from broken glass and was taken to the hospital for observation. The gunmen fled the scene in a white sedan, believed to be connected to the attack, which was later found engulfed in flames near 46th Street and Winchester Avenue.

Here is a recap of the weekend’s shootings based on information provided by the Chicago Police Department:

Friday, August 1

– 3000 block of North St. Louis Avenue: Two men, aged 20 and 29, were shot while standing on the sidewalk.
– 300 block of West 64th Street: A 30-year-old man arrived at the hospital with a gunshot wound to the inner left thigh.
– 4300 block of West Adams Street: A 19-year-old woman was shot in the face and neck inside a residence.

Saturday, August 2

– 6600 block of South Green Street: A 60-year-old man was shot in the leg and arm while standing outside.
– 6500 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue: An 18-year-old man was shot in the leg by someone firing from an SUV.
– 1800 block of West 18th Street: A 25-year-old man was shot in the arm near the back of a residence.
– 3000 block of West 37th Place: A 30-year-old man was fatally shot in the shoulder and back by three assailants who opened fire.
– 1700 block of South Damen Avenue: A 45-year-old man was shot multiple times while walking outside.
– 0–100 block of West 95th Street: An 18-year-old man was shot in the chest and flank on a Red Line train.
– 1000 block of North Noble Street: A 50-year-old man and a 24-year-old man were found with gunshot wounds.

– 1000 block of South Monitor Avenue: A 21-year-old woman was shot in the mouth while walking outside.
– 1800 block of South Blue Island Avenue: A 35-year-old man and a 65-year-old woman were shot.
– 2100 block of South Pulaski Road: A 42-year-old woman was shot in the thigh from a gold-colored vehicle.
– 5500 block of South Ashland Avenue: A 42-year-old man sitting in a vehicle was shot in the back.
– 8600 block of South Wallace Street: A 27-year-old man was shot in the wrist.

Monday, August 4

– 4600 block of South Western Avenue: A 55-year-old man was shot in the shoulder during a fight.

It is important to note that HeyJackass data includes shootings on expressways within city limits, which are not counted by the Chicago Police Department as the Illinois State Police handles those incidents. The definition of “weekend” also varies between HeyJackass and CPD. HeyJackass defines it as noon Friday to 6 a.m. Monday, while CPD uses a narrower window from 6 p.m. Friday to midnight Sunday.

This detailed account of the weekend’s shootings provides insight into the unfortunate incidents that occurred in Chicago. Let us continue to work towards a safer and more peaceful community.
