A live stream that was meant to broadcast a high school hockey team’s senior tournament to family members who couldn’t attend captured a terrifying moment when a gunman opened fire at the match, causing chaos as players and spectators fled for safety.
The shooting took place inside Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, Rhode Island around 2:30 p.m., resulting in two fatalities and three injuries. Police are currently investigating the incident as a “family dispute.”
Authorities believe the gunman took his own life, with indications suggesting that he may have been targeting members of his own family, although this has not been confirmed. The shooter was found deceased inside the arena near one of the victims.
The game was in progress when approximately 11 gunshots were heard, prompting students and spectators to take cover. While some sought refuge in the locker rooms, others made a frantic dash for the exit, with players on the ice rushing off and barricading themselves.
The chaotic scene was captured on video as screams filled the stadium, with some attendees giving directions and others trying to escape. Branden Mello, a local sports editor present at the game, reported the sequence of events involving the gunman.
The incident involved students from various high schools in the area, with reassurances from school authorities that all students were safe and accounted for.
