CIA Believes COVID Likely Originated From A Lab, But Agency Has Low Confidence In Its Own Finding

The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) now believes that the virus responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic likely originated from a laboratory in China, according to an assessment released on Saturday. The report, completed at the request of the Biden administration and former CIA Director William Burns, points the finger at China while acknowledging that the agency has “low confidence” in its conclusion.

The finding is not based on any new intelligence but rather on fresh analyses of existing information. The report, declassified and released by President Donald Trump’s pick for CIA Director, John Ratcliffe, suggests that the evidence leans towards a lab origin over a natural one, though with low confidence due to deficiencies in the evidence.

Previous assessments on the origins of COVID-19 have been divided on whether the virus emerged from a Chinese lab or naturally. The new CIA assessment is unlikely to definitively resolve the debate, as Chinese authorities have not cooperated fully with investigations.

While the exact origin of the virus remains unknown, scientists believe that it may have circulated in bats before infecting other species and eventually spreading to humans. Some investigations have raised the possibility of a lab leak in Wuhan as the most likely origin, though with low confidence in the findings.

John Ratcliffe, who supports the lab leak scenario, has emphasized the importance of considering this theory based on scientific evidence and common sense.

The CIA spokesperson stated that the agency will continue to assess any new credible intelligence or information that could alter their current assessment.
