Conservative radio host Ben Ferguson surprised the panel on CNN’s “NewsNight” with a story about a conversation he had with the undocumented wife of one of his best friends.
“One of my closest friends married an undocumented immigrant,” explained Ferguson, who hosts the “Verdict” podcast with Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas). “During dinner, I told her, ‘I’m sorry that you chose to break the law. Many Americans break laws and face consequences for their actions.'”
Host Abby Phillip sought clarification, noting the relevance of the anecdote in light of the Trump administration’s strict immigration policies.
“Did you tell her she should be deported?” Phillip inquired.
Ferguson responded, “I said to her what my father told me if I ever got into trouble: ‘Don’t expect me to bail you out. You are responsible for your choices.'”
The radio host also expressed admiration for the woman, acknowledging her love for her family and friends despite her legal status. He emphasized, “Your kindness and love are not erased by the fact that you broke the law.”
When questioned about reporting the woman to ICE, Ferguson stated, “I wouldn’t call ICE on someone.” He explained that the woman had already sought legal counsel and appeared on his show to discuss her situation.
Other panelists highlighted the common legal predicament faced by many individuals detained by ICE in recent weeks.
