A tragic incident occurred in Downtown Melbourne on Mother’s Day weekend, where a promising college football player, Nathaniel Bernard Jennings, was shot and killed. The 19-year-old freshman defensive lineman for the University of Northwestern, St. Paul, was involved in an altercation with Stephan Dieujuste, a former college basketball player, outside the Neon Rodeo bar around 1:50 a.m.

Upon arriving at the scene, Melbourne Police found Jennings unresponsive and rushed him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Dieujuste, who claimed self-defense, was arrested and charged with manslaughter. The surveillance cameras in downtown captured the shooting, aiding in the ongoing investigation to determine the cause of the argument between the two men.

Jennings, a graduate of Heritage High School, and Dieujuste, a graduate of Bayside High School, may or may not have known each other prior to the tragic incident. The head football coach at the University of Northwestern, Matt Moore, expressed sorrow over Jennings’ untimely passing, highlighting his exceptional character both on and off the field.

The young football star had an impressive freshman season, showcasing his talent with 55 total tackles, 13 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, and one fumble recovery. His death marked the first reported homicide in Melbourne for the year and only the second in the downtown area over the past two years.

Local residents and business owners were shocked and saddened by the incident, emphasizing the safety and peacefulness of the downtown area. Dieujuste appeared in court and was remanded without bond, with his next court appearance scheduled for June 5.
