Colorado Springs police fatally shot a man early Saturday while responding to reports of a disturbance involving a man displaying a firearm near closing time for several nightclubs, as stated by the department.
Officers were called to the 100 block of East Pikes Peak Avenue in downtown Colorado Springs just after 1:30 a.m. after reports of a disturbance. Surveillance cameras in the area identified a man matching the description, visibly carrying what appeared to be a firearm, according to police.
Upon approaching the man, he fled and reached for his waistband. An officer fired at the man, striking him. Despite receiving immediate medical attention from officers, the man succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
A gun was later discovered at the site of the shooting.
The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office will handle the investigation into the incident. Colorado Springs police have committed to releasing additional information, including body camera footage, within 21 days. The sheriff’s office is also investigating a separate shooting involving Colorado Springs police on June 23.
