A heroic Chicago police officer narrowly escaped tragedy early Sunday morning on the Far South Side when his protective vest stopped a bullet fired by an armed offender during a struggle. The incident unfolded just before 1 a.m. when 911 callers reported that a neighbor had a gun and had broken down their door in the 11400 block of South Davol. Gunshots were also reported.

Officers swiftly responded to the scene and encountered a chaotic situation. According to police radio transmissions reviewed by CWBChicago, arriving officers were met with gunfire and immediately called for backup. One officer reported being shot in the chest but thankfully his vest prevented any serious injury.

The tense moments were captured in audio recordings, with officers urgently calling for assistance. Despite the dangerous situation, the officer’s protective gear proved to be a lifesaver.

The Chicago Police Department stated that officers from the 22nd District intervened in an altercation involving a 35-year-old armed man and an 18-year-old. As officers attempted to intervene, the gunman accidentally discharged his weapon, injuring both the teen and the officer. Another officer fired back, striking the armed man and inadvertently hitting the teen again. Both individuals were hospitalized in fair condition, while the injured officer has been treated and released.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is conducting an investigation into the incident and has appealed for any witnesses to come forward. The Chicago Police Department’s Investigative Response Team remains on-site to gather further details.

In a statement released by the CPD, the full account of the incident was provided, detailing the sequence of events and the current status of those involved. The officers implicated will be placed on administrative duties for a standard 30-day period as the investigation progresses.
