Authorities are now looking into the golf cart mishap that has left former NFL quarterback John Elway’s close friend, Jeff Sperbeck, in critical condition, as confirmed by TMZ Sports.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office has initiated an inquiry into the incident, which occurred in La Quinta, Calif., on Saturday evening. At this point, the investigation is solely for gathering information.
Investigators are currently collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses. The primary objective for law enforcement is to determine if any criminal activity took place.
The incident occurred as Elway, Sperbeck, their spouses, and Elway’s son were departing a post-Stagecoach gathering. Elway was driving the golf cart when Sperbeck tragically fell off, resulting in severe head injuries.
Elway was quick to call emergency services for assistance.
Sperbeck was found unconscious but breathing when paramedics arrived. He is currently hospitalized, with a grim prognosis as he is on life support, and medical professionals are preparing for organ donation.
Sperbeck served as Elway’s agent during his NFL career and later became his business partner, co-founding 7Cellars winery in 2013.
Elway has not issued a public statement regarding the incident.
